WHAT ELSE DO WE DO?
Alongside our thesis editing, we have a regular and increasing body of work that can loosely be described as “non-academic.” It is certainly widely varied in scope, length, subject matter and audience, while still requiring work on the fundamentals of grammar, style, syntax, layout, punctuation and so on. In some cases it needs to conform to certain company standards and requirements.
The majority of these jobs are short-notice and relatively short pieces of work, up to 30 pages, and usually needing to be completed within a few days or even a few hours. Some are larger pieces, some are short-term jobs as part of a long-term contract, and some are from non-native English speakers
A few examples of our recent one-off and ongoing proofreading jobs include:
-A long-term, on-going, freelance contract on behalf of a major US insurance company, checking fire risk reports up to 10,000 words for spelling and grammar, and adherence to company ‘Writing Standards’ - terminology and branding. These usually require same or next-day turnaround.
- The most recent novel of a well-known New Zealand writer, needing a final check for spelling, grammar and punctuation, but also a thorough check for consistency in names, dates and references.
- A full-length book on a hunter’s many experiences over several years. This included checking for consistency in plant, animal and place (and family and mates’) names, hyphenation and capitalisation, and use of US or UK English. (10 hours).
- Transcribing and proofreading a hand-written 400 page ‘Thought for the Day’ book, written by a former Bishop.-
- Proofreading two reports on bereavement and suicide for the Mental Health Foundation.-
- Two reports for Organics New Zealand on the potential EU export market (21 hours).-
- An MSc thesis on early childhood education (12 hours).
COPY WRITING FOR WEBSITES, BLOGS ARTICLES AND FEATURES
WRITE CHOICE is GOOD WITH WORDS, and can help you and your business tell (and sell) your own stories. We can create inspiring, persuasive, clear and effective copy for websites, including vital keywords to keep you high in search engines.
SEEING THE FUNNY SIDE..
“I went to the doctor’s for a bowel checkup. Nothing serious, so I just had a semicolonoscopy”.
Humour is a highly effective tool in creative writing, helping to get the key points across in a memorable way. Humour is never far from the surface in all our creative writing. And, when we were approached to write a series of ‘travel related, humorous articles’ for the Manchester Unity website, we were in our element! See the blog pages for more.
PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES TO YOUR HARD WORK.
WHAT WILL PROOFREADING DO FOR YOU?
When we return your work to you, we will have caught all errors in spelling, grammar and consistency, that would otherwise undermine your message and credibility. We will ensure that the content is clear and easy to read. This should apply, whatever the subject matter.
The Write Choice five-stage proofreading process.
1. On receipt of your document, we will have a quick read through of all or some of it, to get a better feel for the content and style.
2. We will then work through the document line-by-line, checking for errors, word use, and consistency, using Track Changes to note all errors, and also to leave comments and suggestions for you to consider. We too use external aids – dictionaries, thesaurus, search engines, A1, and, frequently, each other throughout the process.
3. We will re-read the whole document, for a final check to make
sure all errors have been spotted, and also to ensure that the whole text reads clearly and communicates what the writer intended.
4. We will return the document to the author, so they can review our Track Changes, reject or accept any alterations, and consider our comments and suggestions.
5. If required, we will undertake a final check once the author has considered our changes.
